This is a simple but extremely important one. Test and measure everything.

* Your advertising
* Your campaigns or offers
* Your direct mail
* The seasons
* Your website
* Your site visitor numbers
* Your enquirers
* Your sales
* Your lost sales
* Your time
* Anything else that could possibly have some bearing on you success

Take each one and analyse it. Businesses that do this will boost their profits instantly. They will spot trends and be able to capitalise on successes and elimate waste.

Most business people are happy to know that if something costs, say, £1,000 to do and brings in £2,000 then that is fine. If fits their budget and all is well.

Well, no it's not. You need the imagination to say, 'What if I spent £2,000 on it?' or 'If I did it slightly differently what would the result be?' You also need to work out whether £1,000 would be better spent on a different medium or whether giving incentives to customers or referral partners would be money better spent.

And that's the essence of it. Test it. Measure it. Try and better it. With everything.
