If you work or have ever worked for a decent company, you may have done some training with them to make you better at what you do, what you want to do, or to bring you into line with new regulations.
If you run a smaller business or professional partnership, who's going to do that? Who's going to train your staff?
Finding time to keep yourself up to date and sharp is crucial. The better you become, the better you can be in your business. You will become confident, expert even, in the areas in which you train, and the more respect will generate from your customers and staff.
So here are my simple hints for keeping yourself ahead.
1, Talk to others
You need to ensure that you are surrounded by people, or can surround yourself from time to time, with people who are in similar situations or are where you want to be. They will be discussing the issues you want to know about and will be interested in your issues.
3, Get on courses
Highly successful people are continually learning. They are aware when they are lacking in skills in certain areas and they do something about it. If your sales and marketing skills are not as sharp as they could be and you are not investing in making them better then you will never be as successful as you deserve to be. Don't be afraid of spending money on good training, it will always pay for itself and more if you implement it. Do it with me or do it elsewhere, but it is imperative that you do it.
4, Read the press
You should regularly do three or four of the following just to keep yourself up to date. Read a 'broadsheet' newspaper, read your trade press, read your customers' trade press if you have specific markets, read a good news website (like the BBC or Sky in the UK), get a generic business magazine, and of course read my free emails.
There are secrets to how you should deal with some of this information, for example you should avoid bogging yourself down in loads of information that is just not useful to you.
